'NEW ADVENTURE': Valencia is ready

By Mancunian Matters staff

Antonio Valencia claims he wants to ‘write his own history’ while wearing Manchester United’s legendary No.7 shirt and is excited about the ‘new adventure’ the coming season brings.

The 26-year-old asked to don the shirt, following the departure of Michael Owen this summer.

George Best, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo have all worn the now legendary number.

Valencia said: “"I’m excited to be wearing the no.7 shirt in the coming season. It's a number I really respect because so many great players have worn the shirt and made history for Manchester United in it. Now I hope I can write my own.

“It's a new adventure but it's something that I'm very relaxed about and also humbled by.”

Speaking to ManUtd.com, the Ecuadorian winger said that despite training ‘hard’ this summer, the squad have still found time to have some fun.

"All the players are feeling good about the new season. There is a great team spirit amongst everyone. I love being part of this team – I have some good friends here and I laugh a lot with guys like Evra, Nani, Anderson, Bebe and Chicharito, but everybody in the group has a laugh together.

“When we have to work, we take things seriously. When the time is right to enjoy ourselves, we do that too.”

And former Manchester United defender Gary Neville also previously backed Valencia in donning the shirt.

"He’s been a fantastic signing for United and thoroughly deserves that No.7 shirt," Neville told the club’s official website.

"Having played with him for a year or two, I can tell you he’s a brilliant footballer, especially to play behind as a right-back. He does the right things at the right time, he works back to help out when you don’t have the ball, he delivers good crosses and he can beat a man.”
