Preview: The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Radio Show… Live! @ The Opera House, Manchester

By Hannah Hulme

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy became an instant classic and a cult phenomenon after its debut as a radio series in 1978.

After five (six if you include Eoin Colfer’s final installation) books, a hit TV series and the 2005 movie, Douglas Adam’s sci-fi creation explodes back into life with a new stage production of the original radio show.

The show arrives at the Manchester Opera House next weeks and runs from Monday July 2 to Wednesday July 4.

Featuring the original cast alongside guest speakers performing as ‘the book’ – Only Fools and Horses’ John Challis and comedian Jon Culshaw for the Manchester dates – the show promises to be a trip down memory lane for fans.

Led by Simon Jones as Arthur Dent, the cast are re-united, bringing to life their characters, and performing highlights from the entire saga.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Radio Show… Live! Is directed by Dirk Mags and features a life-sized Marvin the Paranoid Android made from old radio equipment.

It aims to introduce newcomers of all ages to Vogons, Babel Fish and the ‘whole general mish mash’.

With astute parallels to every day life, it ends the Hitchhiker’s phenomenon by returning to its original format and will be a testament to the science fiction genius that is Douglas Adams.

Tickets start at £19 so don’t panic, make sure you know where your towel is, and visit http://www.hitchhikerslive.com/tour-dates.html for more information.
